The Assam Transport Department on Thursday said that in 2021 alone 2206 persons lost their lives in road accidents.

The Assistant Commissioner of Transport, Gautam Das speaking to the media said that since 2020 more than 4800 people had lost their lives of which 2206 were in 2021 and 2629 were in the year 2020.

Das added that as per records available with the department, there were 5415 accidents recorded in Assam till September 2021 while in 2020, the number of accidents recorded was 6593.

He added that the majority of accidents in the state took place due to negligence by the driver.

As per records, the reasons were said to be overspeeding, drunken driving, and not following mandatory rules on the road.

In order to prevent such cases, the transport department has said that an awareness campaign will be launched on December 31.
