TORCH RALLY NAMRUP

Hundreds of student activists from the regional committee of All Assam Students Union (AASU), Namrup carried out a torch light rally in collaboration with Dibrugarh district AASU committee in protest against closing down of Jorhat Women University in Namrup on Monday.

The rally started from the AASU office near Sonari Tiniali and concluded in Sarmah Tiniali in the town.

In the side-lines of the rally, the district education secretary of the students’ body, Abani Kumar Gogoi said, “Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma  made contradictory statement that Women’s University will be closed and it will be converted into a technical institute, but  they are playing with students’ future in closing down the women’s university which is the only university in Assam situated in Jorhat.”

The protestors also raised slogans like ‘Beti Bachao Beti Parhao’.

The students’ body also demanded immediate appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor in the Assam Women’s University, immediate establishment of the Women’s Technical Institute and the Art and Cultural University.

Those present in the protest were AASU district education secretary Abani Kumar Gogoi; AASU regional committee president Kalpajit Gogoi; AASU regional committee secretary Manash Jyoti Changmai among others.

The protestors also threatened to intensify their agitation if their demands are not met immediately.
