Panbazar Police on Saturday evening arrested Congress MLA of Baghbor constituency, Sheman Ali from his residence in Dispur’s MLA Hostel for making “communal and provocative” remarks.
Multiple FIRs were registered in the state’s various police stations by different organisations demanding MLA Ali’s arrest for his remarks.
Ali is being taken to the Panbazar police station.
Assam Congress served a show-cause notice to the party MLA for making the communal remarks.
It also alleged that by making communal remarks he was “acting as an agent of the BJP”.
“Allegations are rife within party and even outside that you are acting as an agent of the BJP while being a part of the Congress party,” the show-cause notice read.
According to reports, Sherman Ali has been arrested under non-bailable sections.
Sheman Ali in a statement justified the killing of eight people in Darrang district in 1983 during the Assam agitation, who were declared “martyrs” and he termed them as “killers”.
