The All Assam Studentsโ€™ Union (AASU), on Monday, formed a human chain to lodge its protest against construction of a toll gate in the south bank approach road towards Bogibeel bridge in upper Assamโ€™s Dibrugarh district.

The members of AASU Dibrugarh, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district units protested for over two hours, which brought traffic on the busy highway to a standstill.

The AASU protestors, holding placards and banners, raised slogans against the Assam government for โ€˜approvingโ€™ construction of toll gate.

โ€œWe donโ€™t want a toll gate in this area because most of the patients comes from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur to Dibrugarh for treatment and they will face problem. This is not a four-lane highway. Then why the government is setting up toll gate here,โ€ said AASU Dibrugarh district president Abani Kumar Gogoi.

โ€œIllegal construction of toll gate in Bogibeel approach road should be stopped immediately. The government should first construct the roads, which are in bad condition,โ€ the AASU leader added.

Another AASU leader said, โ€œThe government has been unjust towards the people of these areas by allowing construction of a toll gate. We will continue our protest until the government withdraws its decision.โ€
