Meghalaya Home Minister James Sangma on Wednesday termed as ‘unfortunae’ the murder of RTI activist and youth leader Poipynhun Majaw and the vandalism by Khasi Students’ Union ((KSU) volunteers in Shillong during its 40th anniversary celwebration.
James further said he was personally monitoring the matter and that police were committed to ensure justice.
Questioned over the nature and motive of killing of RTI activist Majaw, who was the president of the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF), James said investigations are on.
Majaw had recently exposed a large misappropriation of public funds in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
The RTI activist was found murdered at Khliehriat, around 90 km from Shillong on Monday night last.
The body of 38-year-old Poipynhun Majaw was found in the morning near a bridge in Khliehriat, the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills.
On the other hand, violence marred the 40th anniversary celebration of the KSU in Shillong on Tuesday leaving one person seriously injured.
Trouble erupted at that moment along GS Road when some KSU volunteers holding the union’s flag started thrashing up non-tribals walking on the footpath with the flag sticks.
Traffic came to a grinding halt even as KSU volunteers also pelted stones at shops and other business establishments that surprisingly kept their shutters down.
