Dibrugarh police has arrested an alleged kidney racketeer from a hideout at Abhaypur in Tengakhat in Dibrugarh district of upper Assam late on Sunday night. 

The arrested accused has been identified as Gautam Sonowal alias Girin Sonowal of Lalmati Tinsukia Gaon of Lezai in Dibrugarh district.

Dibrugarh Additional superintendent of police – Bitul Chetia said, “We arrested him last night from a hideout at Abhaypur area in Tengakhat. Girin Sonowal and Bipul Konwar alias Bhaity have been running the racket for many years in Dibrugarh. Both target poor people and convince them to sell their kidneys.” 

Chetia said, “They keep maximum amount of money from the buyer and pay minimal amount to the doner.” 

A case under section 370 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Dibrugarh police station.

“A few days back, we arrested one more individual named Samar Paul in connection with the case. A person can donate his/her kidney to a relative, but if anyone found donating his kidney in lieu of money or if someone is forced to donate kidney, it becomes a crime,” Chetia added. 

Recently, an incident came to light in upper Assam Dibrugarh district where tea garden workers were targeted by human organs mafia. 

Ramu Karmakar of Singlijan tea estate in Dibrugarh admitted of selling one of his kidneys to a person for an amount of Rs 3.5 lakh in April. 

Later it come to light that Gautam Sonowal alias Girin went to the house of Ramu Karmakar and convinced him to sell his kidney.
