The Mizoram government has approved the appointment of Tokyo Olympian Lalremsiami as hockey chief coach. 

This was announced by Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Thursday evening. 

Hockey star Lalremsiami was the only athlete from Mizoram to have represented India at the Tokyo Olympics. 

Lalremsiami has been appointed as hockey chief coach, a group A post, under the Mizoram sports and youth services department.

“Proud to announce that Govt. of Mizoram has approved the appointment of Ms Lalremsiami, National Hockey Player and the only Olympian from #Mizoram at the Tokyo Olympic 2020 to the post of Chief Coach (Hockey) Group-A post under Sports & Youth Services Department,” tweeted CM Zoramthanga.

Earlier on Wednesday, the state government had also allotted a house plot measuring 691.85 sq.m to Lalremsiami in her home town Kolasib.

The land belonged to state Land Resource & Water and Soil Conversation department.

Earlier, the state government had also announced Rs 25 lakh cash reward to Lalremsiami to honour her for her participation and performance at the Olympic.

Of the Rs 25 lakh, the government had handed over Rs 10 lakh to her mother Lalzarmawii on June 24.

Lalremsiami will arrive in the state on August 25 and she will be accorded a state-welcome upon her arrival.

State sports director Lalsangliana said that with the august presence of the Chief Minister a special function will be held at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl on August 26 to give the hockey star a warm welcome and honour her for her achievement.

“The remaining Rs 15 lakh cash incentive, job appointment letter and other rewards will be handed over to her during the ceremony,” he said.

He said that some organisations and individual will also honour Lalremsiami with rewards.

The 21-year-old star from Mizoram’s Kolasib town, which borders Assam, is known to be the first female Olympian from a sports-loving Mizoram.

The last Olympian  from the state was archer C. Lalremsanga, who represented India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Lalremsanga was given a coach (grade-II) post under the state government in appreciation of his participation at Olympic.

Lalremsiami was part of the Indian women’s hockey team that participated at the Tokyo Olympics.

However, the Indian women’s hockey team’s dream for the bronze medal was dashed after it lost for the third rank to Great Britain by 3-4.
