Students and locals of as many as four villages in Nagaland’s Mon district, on Friday, protested against the ‘ambush’ by NSCN-KYA on Assam Rifles troopers and locals of Chenloisho village.

Nearly 250 villagers from these four villages staged demonstration against the attack and observed Friday as a “Black Day”.
The protestors further blocked the Wangti-Chenloisio-Chenmoho road as a part of their protest programme against the grenade attack by the NSCN-KYA.

Notably, troopers of the Assam Rifles and villagers of Chenloisho village in Nagaland’s Mon district were allegedly ambushed by cadres of the NSCN-KYA late on Thursday night.
The Assam Rifles troopers and the villagers were allegedly ambushed by the NSCN-KYA cadres while they were returning after clearing landslide debris from Chenloisho-Hydro project.
“In a recent incident at Chenloisho, the true face of NSCN-KYA has emerged wherein they have been indulging in nefarious activities against the local people of Nagaland,” read a statement from the Army’s 3 Corps.
NSCN-KYA militants lobbed as many as three grenades on the Assam Rifles troopers and the villagers.

“In evening, when the villagers and the Assam rifles personnel were returning back together to their locations, three hand grenades were lobbed at them from a height above the dense foliage,” the statement further read.
Of the three grenades lobbed, two did not explode, while one went off resulting in shrapnel injuries to a 75-year-old man.
“Unfortunately, the grenades landed in front of civilians, out of which two didn’t explode however one grenade exploded causing shrapnel injuries to a 75 yrs old local Mr Keipa of Kangynu village,” the statement read.
It adds: “The injured local was immediately rushed by security forces to the company base of Assam Rifles, where he was given first aid and stabilised, and further moved to Mon for treatment.”

Following the attack, security forces swung into action and fired couple of rounds towards the assessed location from where the grenades were allegedly lobbed.
“This cowardly action against locals and security forces while involved in assistance to locals displays that the NSCN-KYA is desperate since the villagers have denied any support with respect to money or ration to these cadres,” the statement adds.
