Dibrugarh Police on Saturday recovered Rs 16.33 lakh from the residence of a maid working in the residence of a doctor in Dibrugarh.

Later, the police arrested the maid in connection with the case.

The arrested maid has been identified as Rumena Begum of the Durgabari area in Dibrugarh.

The doctor, Dr Premananda Das, filed a complaint at Dibrugarh police station and on the basis of the complaint, the maid was arrested.

According to police, the doctor, a resident of Jalan Nagar, Dibrugarh filed a complaint against his maid suspecting that she had stolen money from his house.

Accordingly, the police started an investigation and raided the rented house of the maid, Rumena Begum, in the Durgabari area of Dibrugarh and recovered the cash.

“For the last two years, the maid was involved in this nefarious activity. Every day, she took away Rs 20,000 to 30,000. I kept the money in my locker. I suspected and placed a mobile in the room where it was filmed that the maid has been taking money from the locker,” Das said.

“We can’t say anything right now because we are interrogating the woman, who is accused in the case. We have recovered Rs 16.33 lakh from her residence,” said a police official.
