Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday destroyed a large quantity of drugs during two separate programmes on ‘Seized Drug Disposal’ in Nagaon and Hojai.
Chief minister Sarma drove a bulldozer during the programme at the Barhampur playground in Nagaon district and also burnt a large quantity of drugs, seized by the police.
Informing about the destruction of the drugs, chief minister Sarma in a tweet on Sunday said: “For second consecutive day, @assampolice’s dedicated tirade has led to destroying of 9.733 kg heroin, 253.301 kg ganja, 977 opium, 78340 cough syrup & 271904 nos. of tablets.”
While sharing pictures of the burning of drugs on the day, Sarma informed that the state government has destroyed seized drugs worth Rs 163.58 crore over the last 2 days.
“Destroying of seized drugs worth Rs 163.58 cr over last 2 days speaks volumes of the money involved in drugs trading. It involves evasion of GST & is a severe dent to economy. We’re working in coordination with Manipur & Mizoram to eliminate drugs menace from North East India,” Sarma tweeted.
On the first day, seized drugs were destroyed in Golaghat and Diphu in Karbi Anglong.
In Nagaon, around 10 kg of heroin, 253 kg of ganja, 977 gm of opium and 2 lakh 71 thousand 904 narcotic tablets were destroyed on Sunday.
In Hojai, 736.73 kg of ganja, 353.62 gm of heroin and 45843 narcotic tablets.

In another tweet, chief minister Sarma said the Assam government has adopted zero tolerance policy against drugs & Assam Police has been asked to aggressively step up measures against the menace.
“I appreciate state police’s relentless campaign against #drugs. We shall continue to work together against the scourge,” he added.

“Many in the Assembly have raised the issue of police firings. I told them not to cry when one or two drug kingpins get hit by bullets in the leg… Think about the family, think about the social implication and the negative effect they have on society,” said chief minister Sarma while speaking at Diphu.
