It was a musical evening on March 10 in Guwahati that left the connoisseurs of classical music spellbound. The musical fiesta was organized by West Gauhati Club and Paschim Guwahati Durga Mandir Trust at Bharalumukh Durga Mandir premises.  The event was organized in memory of Pt Hirendra Nath Sarma, the doyen of classical music in Assam.

Several classical singers and musicians including Minati Khound, Samar Hazarika, Pulak Banerjee, Anima Choudhury, Namita Bhattacharya, Dwipen Baruah and Nilima Khatun participated in the event where violinist Minati Khound was honoured with lifetime achievement award.

Programme convener Satyen Sarma emphasized the need for reviving classical music in the city. In 2015, they arranged a classical evening in memory of Pt Hirendra Nath Sarma under the aegis of the Nayantara Club.

“In recent times no event for classical music is held save Bihu. We want to revive classical music in the city for the new generation. During our childhood and youth, lots of programmes were held in the Judges’ Field and Rabindra Bhawan,” Sarma said.

The West Gauhati Club, established in the Bharalumukh area in 1945, is engaged in cultural and sports activities since its establishment.

The organizers are planning to arrange a bigger event next year featuring classical artistes of national repute.
