Many residents in North Assam’s Lakhimpur district have expressed their angst over the alleged vaccine shortage in the district which continues to report a growing number of active COVID-19 cases.
The district health department which had earlier run vaccination facilities in 52 centres is now operating only in six facilities due to the shortage of the Covid-19 vaccine.
According to a health department official, the earlier response by people to vaccination drives was very lukewarm but since the surge of the pandemic in the country from mid-April there has been a tremendous rush for the same.
There was a target of 2.24 lakhs of people above the age group of 45+ for Covid vaccination in Lakhimpur district.
Presently only 18,705 persons of this age group have been administered the vaccine shots. So far the district has 42751 persons vaccinated with the first dose which includes frontline health workers, polling personnel and police.
The second dose of the Covid vaccine has been conducted on 14,356 persons in Lakhimpur district.
The health department officials have expressed helplessness in view of the big rush of people to get vaccinated.
The huge rush of people has forced the department to seek assistance from the police to control the rush.
The Lakhimpur district transport department has started conducting the Covid-19 tests for drivers, ticket collectors and other support staff of the buses of both state and private operators from Tuesday at North Lakhimpur.
The RAT tests were conducted in the association with Lakhimpur district health department.
There are 200 active Covid positive cases in the Lakhimpur district as of Monday evening.
This was stated in the Daily Covid Bulletin-Lakhimpur issued at North Lakhimpur on Monday evening.
Six patients have recovered from the disease so far in the district totaling 44 from April 1.
