Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on the occasion of “World Consumer Rights Day” on Monday urged the people of the state to empower themselves by being aware of their rights as consumers.

“World Consumer Rights Day” is celebrated across the globe to create awareness of consumer rights and policies to help prevent the public from being duped by different service providers.

The theme for this year is “Tackling plastic pollution”.

“This #WorldConsumerRightsDay, let us empower ourselves by knowing our rights and exercising them,” Conrad Sangma tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Union consumer affairs ministry is engaged in running the campaign “Jago Grahak Jago” (Wake up consumers, be aware) to sensitize the masses on consumer rights through the medium of advertisements, audio-visual campaigns and consumer education tools.

In keeping with this year’s theme, the ministry has asked the public to shun using plastic bags that are non-biodegradable in nature and pollute the environment to a great extent.

A tweet by the consumer affairs ministry stated that the campaign will garner awareness and engage consumers to globally adopt more sustainable practices.
