Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on the occasion of โ€œWorld Consumer Rights Dayโ€ on Monday urged the people of the state to empower themselves by being aware of their rights as consumers.

โ€œWorld Consumer Rights Dayโ€ is celebrated across the globe to create awareness of consumer rights and policies to help prevent the public from being duped by different service providers.

The theme for this year is โ€œTackling plastic pollutionโ€.

โ€œThis #WorldConsumerRightsDay, let us empower ourselves by knowing our rights and exercising them,โ€ Conrad Sangma tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Union consumer affairs ministry is engaged in running the campaign โ€œJago Grahak Jagoโ€ (Wake up consumers, be aware) to sensitize the masses on consumer rights through the medium of advertisements, audio-visual campaigns and consumer education tools.

In keeping with this yearโ€™s theme, the ministry has asked the public to shun using plastic bags that are non-biodegradable in nature and pollute the environment to a great extent.

A tweet by the consumer affairs ministry stated that the campaign will garner awareness and engage consumers to globally adopt more sustainable practices.
