Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga said the Assam Rifles bases in Aizawl would be shifted to the outskirts of the city soon.
During a campaign for Aizawl Municipal Corporation polls at Ramhlun in Aizawl on Thursday, Zoramthanga said Assam Rifles authority has been asked to relocate their bases from the heart of Aizawl to Zokhawsang, about 15 km from the state capital within February.
“Officials of Assam Rifles are also willing to shift their battalion headquarters to Zokhawsang and they are preparing for it,” he said, adding that some of them have already shifted to Zokhawsang.
He said all other forces, which have occupied the state’s land, would also be shifted to other places.
The chief minister said he approached both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah over the matter.
There are three Assam Rifles battalions in Mizoram.
First Assam Rifles is based in Lunglei, 8th in Serchhip and 46 Assam Rifles is camped in Aizawl’s Zodin and Khatla areas.
On February 19, 2019, the Union home ministry directed Assam Rifles to shift their bases from Aizawl to Zokhawsang.
