20-month-old Dhanishtha saved 5 lives, including one of an infant, donating her organs and becoming the youngest cadaver donor in India.

Dhanishtha was declared brain dead by doctors at New Delhi’s Ganga Ram Hospital on January 11.

Dhanishtha was admitted to the Ganga Ram Hospital on January 8 in an unconscious state after she fell from the first floor balcony of her home while playing.

After the doctors declared her brain dead on January 11, Dhanishtha’s family decided to donate all her functional organs and have now saved the lives of five patients.

Dhanishtha’s parents Ashish Kumar and Babita hailing from New Delhi’s Rohini took the call of donating their child’s organs after the doctors termed the condition of Dhanishtha ‘irreversible’.

Ashish Kumar said, “During our stay at the hospital, we met many patients who were in dire need of organs. Though we lost our child, our daughter will continue to live, and in the process, improve the quality of life of the needy patients.”

DS Rana, Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, “This noble act by the family is really praiseworthy and should motivate others. At 0.26 per million, India has the lowest rate of organ donation. On an average, five lakh Indians die every year due to lack of organs.”

Notably, one of the benefiters of Dhanishtha’s organs is a 5-month-old infant.

A five-month-old Yemeni boy child, who was on the verge of dying, got a new lease of life after undergoing a heart transplant operation.

The five-month-old boy, who had suffered a heart failure, received the donated heart from Dhanishtha, thus saving his life.

Meanwhile, among the other organs of Dhanishtha donated are her Liver, Kidneys and Corneal tissues.

While, Dhanishtha’s heart was transplanted in a 5-month-old Yemeni boy at the Apollo Hospital, her Liver was transplanted in a 9-month-old baby at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences.

Dhanishtha’s kidneys were used en bloc to perform kidney transplant in a 34-year-old man at Ganga Ram Hospital.

Meanwhile, her corneal tissues were kept at the Ganga Ram Hospital for future use.
