Hearing the pleas against the new farm laws and the farmersโ€™ agitation at the Delhi borders, the Supreme Court on Monday hinted that it might stay the implementation of the three farm laws.

While hearing the petitions, the bench of the top court comprising Chief Justice Bobde Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian on Monday said it was disappointed over the progress of the negotiations between the Centre and the farmers.

The Supreme Court, a media report said, asked the Centre to stay the new farm laws till a committee constituted by it discusses the matter and submits a report.

โ€œLet those farmer unions who say it is progressive say that before the committee. But you have to tell us whether you stay the farm acts or we do it. Keep it in abeyance. What is the issue?โ€

โ€œWe are not in favour of easily staying a law but we want to say donโ€™t implement the law,โ€ the report quoted the apex court as saying.

โ€œSome people have committed suicide, old people and women are a part of the agitation. What is happening?โ€ the bench asked.

The bench further said not a single plea has been filed that said the โ€œfarm laws are goodโ€.

The discussions between the central government and the farmersโ€™ unions have so far failed to find any headway even after eight rounds of talks.

The next round of meeting is scheduled to be held on January 15.

In the last hearing, the apex court had observed that there was no improvement on the ground regarding farmersโ€™ protests.

The Supreme Court is likely to pass an order regarding the issue on Monday (today) or on Tuesday.
