Piped water connections provided in Meghalaya villages under the Jal Jeevan Mission

The Indian government has released a grant-in-aid of Rs 43,73.04 lakhs for implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Meghalaya.

A large number of households in rural areas of the state will be able to access tap water connections under this scheme.

Jal Jeevan Mission is a ministry of Jal Shakti initiative that aims to provide individual piped water connections in every household in rural India by 2024.

Currently, several households in rural Meghalaya have no access to piped water at present and people have to queue in long lines to collect water provided by municipal corporations.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma had earlier said that the Meghalaya government plans to provide water to 2 lakhs rural households safe piped water during the current financial year.

Sangma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing the funds to the state.

“A Grant-in-aid of ?43,73.04 Lakh has been released for the implementation of #JalJeevanMission in #Meghalaya for 2020-21. Thank PM Sh. @narendramodi Ji & Union Minister of @MoJSDoWRRDGR, Sh. @gssjodhpur Ji for bringing tap water connection to every rural household in the state,” tweeted Conrad Sangma.

The state public health engineering department is implementing the scheme in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that half of the country’s households did not have access to piped water and the Jal Jeevan Mission has been adopted to address this problem.

The central government has earmarked funds worth Rs 3.5 trillion for the mission, which is to be implemented in different states of the country with support from their respective state governments.
