The Shillong Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic in Meghalaya got its new Archbishop on Monday.
The Vatican has appointed the current Bishop of Jowai Diocese, Bishop Victor Lyngdoh as the new Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese.
The Shillong Archdiocese has been without Archbishop ever since the demise of Archbishop Most Rev Dominic Jala (SDB) in October 2019.
After the appointment of Bishop Victor as the new Archbishop of Shillong was confirmed, the announcement was made public on Monday at 4.30 pm at the Archbishop’s House in Shillong.
A communiqué issued by Diocesan Administrator of Shillong Archdiocese, Fr John Madur, congratulated Bishop Victor for having appointed as the new Archbishop.
“With great joy, we announce that the Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Most Reverend Victor Lyngdoh as the Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese,” Fr John said.
“We thank God Almighty for providing a shepherd for our Archdiocese. We congratulate Bishop Victor Lyngdoh, we welcome him and pray for him. I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone for the prayers and support given to me during the past one year,” said Fr John in the communiqué.
Fr John has been looking after the Shillong Archdiocese as Diocesan Administrator after the demise of Archbishop Dominic Jala.
Rev Jala died in a car accident in Colusa County, California in the United States of America on October 10, 2019.
Rev Victor was born in Wahlang village, Meghalaya on January 14, 1956.
His priesthood ordination was on January 25, 1987, and ordained as Bishop on April 2, 2006, after his appointment as Bishop of Nongstoiñ Diocese on January 28, 2006.
On October 15, 2016, Bishop Victor was also appointed as the Bishop of Jowai Diocese and installed on November 20, 2016.
Bishop Victor is also the Chairman of the Bible Commission in North East Bishops Council of India.
