The newly elected office-bearers of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Thursday asserted that the students’ union will not remain silent unless the Union government withdraws the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The AASU leaders said that they will continue their fight against the controversial act both in the court and on the streets.

AASU president, Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary, Sankarjyoti Baruah and adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya were in Mangaldai in Darrang to attend a function organized on the occasion of “Swahid Divas” on Thursday.

The AASU leaders strongly criticized the state government for observing Swahid Divas in a grand manner, saying the government was resorting to double standards.

“The government has no right to observe Swahid Divas as it has failed to honour the sacrifices of the martyrs,” said Sankarjyoti Baruah.
“The government is instead promoting the new burden of illegal immigrants in the state,” he said.
AASU leaders recalled the sacrifices of 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement and the contribution of the Darrang district, which is regarded as the birthplace of the movement.
