Two persons were arrested and another detained on Wednesday on charges of assaulting three police personnel including a woman sub-inspector in two separate incidents in Jorhat.

Shantanu Saikia and Dilip Saikia, two brothers were arrested on Wednesday under sections 279, 253, 232 and 34 of the IPC ( Case No: 2570/2020) and sent to jail.

A police source said Shantanu Saikia, who was allegedly in an inebriated condition, fell into a ditch along with his vehicle near the Ghuda Dolling area at Nimati under Nimati police outpost.

When police personnel from the outpost arrived they were verbally abused by Shantanu, who was joined by his elder brother, Dilip Saikia.

The Nimati police called the traffic police to resolve the issue. As soon as the traffic police arrived, both the brothers assaulted them.

Traffic policeman Ranjit Borah was injured in his stomach while another policeman, Pranjit Baruah received injuries in his arm.

The accused were detained up on Tuesday night and sent to jail on Wednesday.

Both the brothers reside in the Charigaon area of Jorhat.

In the other incident, a sub-inspector (SI) of Assam Police, identified as Indu Moni Gogoi, posted in the Police Reserve here, was manhandled by one, Ankur Pathak of Dissoi.

As per a police source, Gogoi on Wednesday was returning to her home near the Dhalasatra Press at Jail Road when she was accosted by Ankur Pathak, who asked her to take him to her house on her two-wheeler.

Gogoi, who was accompanied by her husband on a separate two-wheeler, intervened following which an altercation occurred and Pathak hit him.

The police officer, who came to the rescue of her husband, was also hit by Pathak.

He has been detained up by the police.
