A 45-year old man was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants at Oil field area of Digboi in Tinsukia district on Wednesday.

The deceased has identified as Madhurjya Gogoi.

“Gogoi was working at the Wireless tower at Oil field and after completed his work he was returning from the site along with other workers at Bolero vehicle,” said a source.

“Suddenly, a herd of elephant blocked their way. Two of them fled away but Gogoi was trapped by the wild elephants and they trampled him to death,” the source added.

“As soon as we received the information, we rushed to the Oil field area. Gogoi was sent to the hospital for treatment but doctors declared him brought dead,” said Digboi forest ranger.

Wild elephants started venturing in the Oil field area in search of food.

“We have spotted elephants in the area many a time. Till now, several persons have been killed by elephants in the particular area,” said Bijay Gogoi, a local environmentalist.

“Some people disturb wild elephants while they pass through the area. We should not disturb them,” he added.
