The site of the incident is near the Nonai Forest Reserve along the Indo-Bhutan border, which is about 30 km from the district headquarters, Udalguri.

Udalguri district is among the worst-affected human-elephant conflict zones in Assam.

Elephants come into conflict with people who have either taken shelter between or beside elephant habitats.

A number of people lose their lives due to man-elephant conflict in the district every year.
