Massive fire broke out at Baghjan gas well in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Tuesday.

The incident happened almost a week after a blowout at  a gas well of Oil India Limited (OIL) in Baghjan.

The oil well in the area has been leaking gas uncontrollably since a week after a blowout on May 27.

Visuals show a smoke cloud rising high into the sky.

Sources side the production well of Baghjan 5 under Baghjan Oil field caught fire when the experts were present at the site to control the leakage of oil and gas from the site.

On May 27, 2020, the production well of Baghjan 5 blown out while work over operation were going on.

According to sources, the experts from Singpore were present at the site when the fire caught at the Baghjan 5 oil well.

“Around 1.15 pm we have heard a loud sound from the Baghjan area where the blow out happened recently. We come out from our home and see black smoke comes out from the Baghjan 5 oil well area,” said a local resident.

On the other hand, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal informed the incident to Union petroleum and natural gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan during telephonic conversation.

Chief minister Sonowal instructed Tinsukia district administration to deploy security forces and take all necessary steps to control the blaze.

Sonowal has also appeal the local people of Baghjan to not panic.

Three experts of Singapore based firm “M/s Alert Disaster Control” reached Duliajan on Monday to contain the gas leak at the well.

The three experts are Michael Ernest All corn, senior well control operation, Craig Neil Duncan, senior well control engineer and Edward Harris MacLeod, senior well control specialist.
