The Hynñiewtrep Petroleum Workers’ Union (HPWU) on Thursday petitioned to the Meghalaya government against the action of some dorbar shnongs in Khasi and Jaiñtia hills that disallowed tanker drivers to return to their respective residence after coming from Assam for loading of petroleum products.

In a letter to deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong, HPWU general secretary, R CR Kharsyntiew urged the State Government to direct some the dorbar shnong to allow its members to return to their respective home after coming back from day’s trip.

“Our members are frontline workers providing essential service to the community, and if at all they are not able to return to their residence, where will they stay?” the HPWU asked.

The HPWU also made it clear that the Union would be left with no option but to cease the loading of petroleum products indefinitely, if the tanker drivers are not allowed to return to their respective homes after work.

Urging the government to treat this as an urgent matter in order to avoid any harassment to all the members, the HPWU prayed necessary directions be issued to the dorbar shnongs in general to allow the tanker drivers to return to their respective residence after coming back from loading of the said petroleum products.
