Days after opposition Congress sought the resignation of chief minister Zoramthanga as finance minister, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Monday backed the chief minister citing no finance minister in the country could explain the financial status and the economic future of the state due to the global pandemic.

A statement issued by the party slammed the opposition Congress for demanding Zoramthanga to resign as finance minister.

It said that the outbreak of novel coronavirus has already impacted the world economy and no finance minister can predict the future of their country or state’s economy.

While many individuals, organisations, employees and legislators of MNF, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and BJP contributed towards the chief minister relief fund (CMRF) to fight Covid-19, the Congress legislators were reluctant to do so, the Congress alleged.

It further said that the Congress has nothing to say in terms of financial management as it completely failed during its previous rule in 2010 where over Rs 70 crore was lapsed due to poor financial management by the government.

The Congress on Saturday demanded that that chief minister Zoramthanga should resign from his finance portfolio for allegedly failing to explain the financial status of the state.

The Congress had also alleged that the finance minister was trying to conceal about wasteful expenditure amounting to lakhs of rupees.

“Zoramthanga should give up his finance portfolio to other competent person before it dragged the state into economically worse condition,” the Congress had said.
