A 55-year-old CRPF sub-inspector from Assam, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID19), died on Tuesday at Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi.

SI Ikram Hussain was posted with 31st Battalion of the CRPF in Noida.

Hussain succumbed to his infection due to “breathlessness” during the treatment at around 4 pm, a CRPF official said.

As per reports, the CRPF official, a resident of Borbori under Sarpeta police outpost in lower Assam’s Barpeta district, had got the infection from a nursing assistant of the force who had also tested positive earlier this month.

The SI was reported COVID19 positive on April 24 and was admitted to Safdarjung hospital.

A total of 30 other CRPF personnel in contact with the nursing assistant are kept in a quarantine centre of Delhi government in Mandoli.

The information came at a time when the deadly virus has claimed 54 lives in Delhi and infected over 3,000 people.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condoled the death of the CRPF jawan.

Sonowal tweeted: “Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of @crpfindia jawan Md Ikram Hussain who belonged to Barpeta, Assam. Till his last breath, this brave son of Maa Bharti kept fighting against #COVID19. His undying spirit inspires us to sacrifice everything for the nation. My condolences.”
