India has granted citizenship to 15,036 Bangladeshi nationals since 2014.
The highest number of Bangladeshi nationals, who have been granted Indian citizenship, have been recorded in 2015.
In 2015, a total of 14,880 persons were granted Indian citizenship.
“After signing of Indo-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement in 2015, a total of 14,864 Bangladeshi nationals were granted Indian citizenship under section 7 of the Citizenship Act, 1955,” said union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai on Wednesday.
This is the maximum number of Bangladeshi nationals who have been granted Indian citizenship since 2014.
Apart from Bangladesh, nationals from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar were also granted Indian citizenship, union minister Nityanand Rai said.
Union minister Rai said 2,935 Pakistani nationals were granted Indian citizenship in the same period.
The number of Afghan nationals who have been granted Indian citizenship was 914 while 113 nationals from Sri Lanka were granted Indian citizenship and one person from Myanmar was granted Indian citizenship in 2017.
Records of persons granted Indian citizenship under section 5 by registration or under section 6 by naturalization of the Citizenship Act, 1955 are maintained as per the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and rules made there under, said Rai.
According to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian immigrants, who came from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh on or before December 31, 2014 will be granted Indian citizenship in six years.
