AIUDF MLA of Assamโ€™s Dhing constituency, Aminul Islam, has sparked another controversy on Wednesday saying that Ahoms are not indigenous people in Assam.

Islam claimed that Bengali-speaking Miya Muslims who migrated from East Pakistan or erstwhile Bengal province belong to the indigenous community of the State.

The Dhing legislator was quoted as saying in reports, โ€œAhoms came from Yunnan province of China-Myanmar boder. That province was never a part of India. They came from a foreign land.โ€

โ€œOur ancestors came from a district which was a part of undivided India. Why we are not indigenous?โ€ Islam stated.

This has sparked off a row outraging different sections of the society.

Notably, Chaolung Sukaphaa and other kings of the historic Ahom regime are remembered with reverence for their role in forming โ€˜Bor Asomโ€™ or โ€˜Greater Assamโ€™.
