Jorhat Press Club staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office on Wednesday demanding the withdrawal of the CAA and false cases against journalists.

The Jorhat police have lodged “false cases” against two reporters, who took part in protests against the amended Citizenship Act last month.

Members of different social, cultural, literary and students organizations also participated in the demonstration.

Later, the Jorhat Press Club through the office of the Jorhat deputy commissioner, sent a memorandum to the Assam chief minister, seeking withdrawal of the CAA and “false cases” lodged against the journalists.

Last month. Jorhat police arrested a reporter of an Assamese daily, published from Dibrugarh and Guwahati on charges of inciting violence during the protests against the amended Act.

The reporter was sent to judicial custody by a local court. Subsequently, the said reporter was granted bail by the court.

A case has also been filed under various sections of the IPC against Utpal Borah, a reporter of Guwahati-based Assamese news channel, who also joined the stir against the CAA.

However, he is yet to be arrested.

Members of the Jorhat Bar Association also staged a demonstration in front of the Jorhat DC’s office on Wednesday demanding the withdrawal of the CAA.
