Dibrugarh: Assam Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture Minister Biswajit Daimary on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed Handloom Trade Centre at Chowkidinghee, near the ASTC Bus Terminal in Dibrugarh.
Built at a cost of Rs 991.70 lakh with financial support from the North Eastern Council (NEC) and the Government of Assam, the centre is expected to provide marketing opportunities for traditional handloom products and support local weavers.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the trade centre marks a new chapter for Assam’s handloom sector by providing a platform for weavers to promote their products and access wider markets.
The facility is expected to enable weavers to connect directly with buyers, promote indigenous textile products, and expand their reach to national and international markets.
Several dignitaries attended the inaugural ceremony, including ATDC Chairman Rituparna Baruah, BJP President Dulal Bora, former Sonari MLA Nabanita Handique, and senior officials of the Handloom and Textile Department.
The minister also spoke about various state government initiatives, including Swanirbhar Naari, loom distribution programmes, the Kaziranga Handloom Park, and Handloom Model Villages, which are aimed at improving the livelihoods of indigenous weavers.
Officials said the new Handloom Trade Centre would support the local handloom industry and promote cultural tourism in Dibrugarh by showcasing Assam’s textile heritage to a wider audience. The government said it remains committed to strengthening the handloom sector in the state.
