Hours after Central government issued gazette notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, massive protests irrupted in north Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Saturday.
Anti-CAA protesters clashed with police and security personnel when the security men tried to stop burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Despite police resistance, the protesters burnt the effigies Prime Minister Modi, home minister Shah, chief minister Sonowal and finance minister Sarma in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in North Lakhimpur.
The protesters also chanted ‘go back’ slogans against the police.
Angry crowds led by various organizations protested against the notification of the law by holding demonstrations, burning effigies and taking out torchlight marches.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parichad (AJYP) activists took out a huge protest march from the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School against the CAA.
The AJYCP also called for a two-hour shutdown in North Lakhimpur from 12 noon in protest of the CAA notification.
Later in the evening the AASU took out protest torchlight rallies across Lakhimpur district in association with 30 other ethnic organizations in North Lakhimpur, Lilabari, Nowboicha, Laluk, Bangalmora, Bihpuria, Narayanpur, Madhupur, Dhalpur, Simaluguri, Panigaon, Ghilamora, Dhakuwakhona and Chawuldhowa.
Various socio-cultural organisations also staged demonstrations against the CAA notification with songs and poems across Lakhimpur district.
