A number of coins with immense numismatic value were discovered at Dhakuwakhona in Lakhimpur district.

The coins were discovered in a paddy field of one Samal Handique of Bagisagaon area in Dhakuwakhona sub-division of Lakhimpur district on Wednesday afternoon.

The discovery was made accidentally while Handique was ploughing the land by a tractor.

Dulen Chetia, a resident of Chetiagaon area of Dhakuwakhona, stumbled upon the coins while he was operating the tractor.

The coins were kept in a terracotta pot.

“I was unaware about the discovery and came to know about it only after someone posted about it online,” Handique said.

After the photos went viral on social media, Handique’s son Pabitra called Dulen Chetia and asked him to show the coins.

Handique, however, alleged that Chetia refused to show the coins and said he distributed the coins between him and his assistant.

The photos of the coins posted on social media indicate the inscription of Ahom King Swargadeo Rajeshwar Singha (1751-1769) of the mid-eighteenth century.

The actual numbers of the coins, however, are yet to be ascertained.
