Former Tripura CM Manik Sarkar said law and order situation in the state has gone for a toss under the BJP-led government.
“Law and order situation in the last one year in the state has deteriorated drastically,” Sarkar said.
He was speaking after visiting the residence of one CPIM (M) leader who was allegedly murdered on Saturday by an IPFT worker.
“This is a political murder. Political murders in the state have increased in the last one year,” Sarkar reiterated.
Tufan Debbarma, a member of the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), CPI (M)’s tribal front in Tripura, was hacked to death allegedly by an IPFT worker on Saturday night.
The alleged murderer of the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI(M))’s leader has been identified as Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT)’s Nirajit Debbarma.
The dead GMP leader was a member of the Nalchhar local committee of CPI (M) in Sonamura.
Police informed that both the victim and the accused are residents of Padmalochan village under Melaghar police station.
“On Saturday night miscreants barged into Tufan’s residence and dragged him outside and killed him,” police informed.
“His wife and children were not present at that time,” they added.
“The villagers came to know about the murder on Sunday morning when Tufan’s bruised body was recovered at some distance from his residence,” police added.
Villagers informed the police immediately and the villagers launched a manhunt to nab the culprit.
“The ‘culprit’ was hiding in the jungle and we caught him after a massive search operation,” police said.
“The accused is ‘mentally unstable’ and we are yet to ascertain the reason behind the ‘murder’,” police added.
