The Congress core committee led by Sonia Gandhi had a discussion on the NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) on Friday.

The committee reiterated their stand of protecting the genuine Indian citizens.

The meeting, held in New Delhi, was chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Senior party leaders like KC Venugopal, former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma, Luizinho Faleirio, Ahmed Patel and Assam Congress president Ripun Bora were present in the meeting.

Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, former Silchar MP Sushmita Dev and Piyush Shanti Vishwas also attended the meeting took place at Sonia Gandhi’s residence.

A Congress leader, who attended the meeting, told Northeast Now that as far as the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is concerned “we have reiterated that no Indian citizen should be harassed.”

The meeting also observed that let the government come with the CAB in the Parliament.

“Our stand is clear. CAB should not dilute the significance of Assam Accord,” said a senior leader from Assam, who attended the meeting.

Most of northeastern states including Meghalaya have opposed the CAB.

Few days back, similar meeting took place at 10 Janpath over the NRC issue.

Sources said the party discussed strategies on how to deal the issue as the Congress has been at loggerheads with BJP and its style of functioning as far as the NRC update process is concerned.

The party also took serious note of the announcement made by union home minister Amit Shah of preparing similar NRC across India.
