Activists of GOONJ – a New Delhi based organization (NGO) with the help of Northeastern Club of Jonai distributed relief materials including foodstuff, clothes and kitchen item to flood-hit families of Jonai circle in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Friday and Saturday.
The NGO distributed the items to more than 335 flood affected families of No-4 Bahir Sille, Tari basti and Bera chapori, Joldhuvi and Nalinipam villages under Jonai revenue circle during the couple of days.
Opening the relief distribution at Jonai on Friday, GOONJ’s coordinator for north-eastern region Romen N said their organization was working in different districts of Assam and helping the poor families during disastrous situation.
He informed that the relief materials including food grains including rice, pulses,fruit products and clothes were given under it NJPC (Not just piece of cloth) project among flood affected families.
Earlier too, the NGO distributed such relief items to 300 flood-affected families during August this year thereby gave respite of the poor families struggling for food and cloths.
The GOONJ also distributed flood aid in the affected villages of Dhemaji, Sissioborgaon and Bordoloni blocks under the district.
The NGO is working in 22 states of the country, bagged a number of recognition.
Thus, founder of the NGO, Anshu Gupta has already been given a number of awards including Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2012, Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award in 2014 and Ramon Magsaysay Award in 20015 in recognition of his social services.
The State’s water resources minister Keshab Mahanta, Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu and officials of District Legal Service Authority have visited flood-hit areas of the district and reported the ground situation to the state government.
Later, a three-member central team visited flood hit areas of Dhemaji district and collected report of loss and damages caused by flash flood from the department officials.
As per report of District Disaster Management Authority, about 1,38,434 populations of 430 villages have been affected by flash flood in Dhemaji district and 9,189 hectares standing crop were destroyed by repeated flash flood.
