Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday said that Congress would provide all help to those left out of the final NRC in proving their citizenship at the Foreignersโ Tribunals (FTs).
He was speaking to reporters in New Delhi on Saturday after an hour-long meeting with the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.
โWe have apprised Soniaji about the issue. She along with other senior leadership will take a party stand on the NRC issue,โ Gogoi added.
Congress leaders from the Northeast met Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi after the publication of final NRC list on Saturday.
Gogoi was accompanied by several other Northeast Congress leaders including former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma.
โEvery section of Assam is unhappy with the status of NRC. Even BJP Ministers are complaining,โ Gogoi added.
โCareless implementation will result in many genuine Indian citizens to unnecessarily face the courts,โ he further said.
โNation above politics is our motto,โ Gogoi tweeted later.
Former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma said, โAs you all know, the NRC is an exercise under the Assam Accord.
โThe stand of our party is very clear- rights of the real citizens should be safeguarded,โ said Sangma.
โDetails of as who is real citizen would be decided only after the detailed information is out,โ Sangma further said.
Echoing the same view, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said genuine citizens of the country must be protected and included in the NRC list.
Before Sangma and Gogoi, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and the partyโs Assam in-charge Harish Rawat also met Sonia Gandhi at her residence on the NRC issue.
