Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi on Thursday said that incidents of unpleasant behaviour in the courts of the country are on the rise and are replacing peaceful deliberations and discussions.
While speaking during the Independence Day celebrations in the Supreme Court, Gogoi urged the stakeholders to ensure that the dignity and decorum of the judiciary are not lost.
The CJI lamented that cases of inappropriate behavior have raised their ugly heads in all the courts of the country and loud and motivated conduct have replaced peaceful discussions and deliberations.
He further added that the judiciary should be reinvented to tackle the large number of cases and to ensure that all the cases are solved within a proper time frame.
The Independence Day celebrations of the apex court were attended by law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, attorney general K K Venugopal and other dignitaries.
Prasad said that there should be an in-house mechanism to ensure discipline, judicial propriety and accountability among judges.
The law minister also said that some of the high courts of the country unnecessarily keep on pending cases.
Venugopal said that courts of appeal should be set up in the northern, southern, eastern and western regions of the country and the Supreme Court should give judgement only on constitutional matters.
