A local court here on Thursday sent four arrested NRC officials to 14-day judicial custody.

The Dhupdhara police on Wednesday evening arrested the four persons engaged in NRC update exercise at the Kothakuthigaon here for allegedly demanding money from a person.

Police sources said based on an FIR filed by one Nagar Ali of Boko in Kamrup district at the Dhupdhara police station, police arrested the four employees.

Ali in his complaint alleged that NRC official Barasha Das had demanded Rs 80 in return of carrying out his bio metric verification necessary for the NRC verifications process.

When Ali refused to pay the money, Das and three other staffers– Karuna Biswas, Mrinal Kalita and Soriful Hasan–get into a heated argument with him.

On being informed to police by someone, a team of Dhupdhara police immediately rushed to the NRC centre and bring the situation under control.

The NRC staffers were subsequently arrested on the basis of the complaint.

The NRC authorities have directed the employees to return the collected money to the respective persons immediately and complete the verification works free off cost.

“During investigations it is found that Das took Rs 80 each from the people who came for the verifications,” said a police official.
