Guwahati: The Supreme Court is set to pronounce its order on Monday, October 5, on the bail petition filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case concerning the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The hearing on Mahanta’s bail plea has already been concluded, with a bench of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice R Mahadevan scheduling October 5 for the pronouncement of its order.

The matter had remained pending as the court considered arguments from both sides and reviewed the progress of the trial. The Supreme Court had also sought updates from the Assam government on the proceedings before considering the bail plea.

Mahanta is currently lodged in Baksa jail along with five other accused. He was arrested in October 2025 in connection with the case following Garg’s death in Singapore in September that year.

During the proceedings, the Assam government informed the court that the trial was progressing and that witness examination was underway. The state told the court that statements of 94 out of 394 witnesses had been recorded as of August 14.

The government also informed the court that several key witnesses based in Singapore were yet to appear before the trial court and that arrangements were being made to record their statements.

The Supreme Court had directed the state to ensure that the trial proceeds without unnecessary delays. The progress of the proceedings was also taken into consideration while examining Mahanta’s request for bail.

Mahanta, who was associated with organising the North East India Festival in Singapore, is among the accused in the case related to Garg’s death. A fast-track court in Assam has framed murder charges against four accused, including Mahanta.

The Supreme Court’s order on the bail plea is expected to determine whether Mahanta will be granted relief while the trial continues.
