The Goalpara District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) with the help of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) officers has taken responsibility of a 12-year-old abandoned and ailing child.

The child, who was undergoing treatment at the Goalpara civil hospital, has been referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for better treatment.

โ€œThe child will be sent to GMCH under the supervision of DCPU within a week,โ€ informed Labi Sarma, non-institutional care protection officer of DCPU.

The child was rescued in an ailing condition with open sore on both of his foot in front of a shopping mall on Monday by three local social workers.

The social workers โ€“ Abdul Awal Hoque, Abdus Salam and Atowar Rahman โ€“ rescued the boy with the help of the CWC.

โ€œAt the time we rescued the boy, he was begging from the customers outside the mall entrance and sometimes wailing out of pain,โ€ Abdul Awal told Northeast Now.

โ€œHe was having a hard time to get rid of the flies and insects from disturbing him,โ€ Awal added.

Talking to media persons, CWC members Dibakar Sarma and Samsun Nehar said, โ€œThe CWC Goalpara will take all necessary steps for the best interest of the child.โ€

Briefing the story of the victim child, DCPU officers Jhanti Borah and Pranati Neog said, โ€œThe victim child belongs to a poverty-stricken family with religious minority background.โ€

โ€œHis father has already left the family and his mother is an incapacitated parent,โ€ they said.

โ€œThe victim sustained the injury in a truck accident at Barpeta district last year and due to lack of proper medical treatment, the sore has taken the present form,โ€ they added.
