KOHIMA: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has reiterated its call for indigenous representation in the upcoming urban local bodies (ULBs) elections in Nagaland, stating that its stand extends beyond the current Nagaland Municipal Act to protect and safeguard the Naga identity.
Interacting with the media, NSF officials stressed on their firm stance on “Nagas by blood and not adoption” in advocating for indigenous representation in the upcoming civic bodies elections in Nagaland.
NSF general secretary Chumben Khuvung clarified that, according to this stance, Naga women married to Nagas from other regions such as Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh or Myanmar are not eligible for these elections.
This position also excludes adoptive candidates, including women married to non-locals and their offspring.
Khuvung stated that the NSF’s focus is strictly on protecting the rights and interests of Naga indigenous people within the ULB elections in Nagaland and does not extend to Indian elections.

He expressed confidence in the wisdom and discernment of Naga elders and tribal hohos to safeguard these interests.
Following the NSF’s public appeal, several individuals have reportedly withdrawn their candidacies.
NSF vice-president Mteisuding underscored the Federation’s commitment to preserving the culture, values, traditions, and socio-political rights of the Naga people.
The NSF officials urged the Naga public to unite and support their call to safeguard the interests and identity of the Nagas of Nagaland.
“The wisdom of the Nagas will prevail,” the NSF leaders stated.
