IMPHAL: A 30-year-old man, Laishram Kumarjit, was found with a gunshot wound in front of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Khumbong, Imphal West district of Manipur, on Saturday (May 18) morning.

Kumarjit, a resident of Takyel Kongbal, had been abducted from his home by unidentified armed men on Friday (May 17) night.

Kumarjit was discovered around 8:40 am on Saturday (May 18) with a bullet injury to his left calf.

The proscribed United National Liberation Front, Koireng group (UNLF-K), later claimed responsibility for the shooting.

In a video message, Pibarel Angomcha, a spokesperson for the UNLF-K, stated that Kumarjit was punished for his alleged involvement in sex trade in Manipur.

The incident comes as part of the UNLF-K’s intensified “campaign against immoral and illicit activities” in Manipur.

The militant group recently highlighted their crackdown on the sex trade by apprehending two women in Bishnupur district of Manipur on May 12.

According to the video message, these actions are part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to combat such activities and enforce moral standards within Manipuri society.

The Manipur police are investigating the incident, and the condition of Laishram Kumarjit remains stable.

The authorities have yet to comment on the claims made by the UNLF-K or provide further details on their investigation into the abduction and shooting.
