NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu has been called upon to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the ongoing violence in Jiribam district of Manipur.

The recent surge in violence in Jiribam district of Manipur rendered over 1200 Meiteis homeless, forcing them to seek shelter in various relief camps.

The Joint Action Committee Against Language & Cultural Aggression (JACALCA) submitted a memorandum to the President, demanding immediate intervention by the central government.

They emphasized that a passive response to such violence allows perpetrators to act with impunity, perpetuating a cycle of fear and insecurity among the vulnerable communities.

The memorandum urged the central government to provide adequate compensation to the victims of the violence and to form an SIT to investigate the ongoing turmoil.

It called for the immediate prosecution of individuals or groups found guilty of instigating violence.

JACALCA also demanded that the Manipur government take necessary actions to restore normalcy, highlighting that Manipur and Jiribam are home to various communities beyond the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups.

The memorandum stressed the importance of protecting the rights to life, liberty, and security for all residents.

The recent violence in Jiribam in Manipur, which borders Assam, has led many families to seek refuge in the Lakhipur areas of Assam.

The memorandum warned that this migration could potentially ignite clashes in Assam, calling for a strict security vigil in the bordering areas and along the riverbanks of the Barak River in the Barak Valley region of Assam.

The memorandum highlighted the interconnected nature of ethnic violence and government passivity, advocating for comprehensive and coordinated responses.

It emphasized the need to uphold human rights, promote dialogue, and foster a culture of accountability and justice in Manipur to ensure peace, security, and dignity for all residents.
