IMPHAL: In a dramatic protest on Thursday (June 13), students of Dhanamanjuri University in Imphal, Manipur set fire to desks and benches in front of the varsity’s administrative block, demanding the resignation of the vice chancellor and dean.

The students pressed for the immediate conduct of the December 2023 exams, which were delayed due to the ongoing ethnic violence and resultant law and order issues in Manipur.

The protest saw a large number of students storming the university’s A-Block. Frustrated by their inability to meet the vice chancellor and dean, the students vandalized university property before setting it ablaze.

The destruction occurred in the presence of police and university staff.

Disagreements over the exam schedule, particularly concerning the participation of displaced students, have fuelled the strike.

A student leader cited these unresolved issues as the primary cause of the delay in conducting the December 2023 exams.

Dhanamanjuri University, established under “The Dhanamanjuri University Act 2017”, officially commenced operations on April 6, 2018.

It includes five constituent colleges: DM College of Arts, Science and Commerce; GP Women’s College; and LMS Law College.
