Guwahati: Gunfire broke out near the White House on Saturday evening after an individual previously known to the U.S. Secret Service arrived at the complex, pulled out a firearm, and opened fire.

Security personnel responded immediately and fatally shot the attacker.

Officials said a bystander was also injured during the exchange of fire, though details about the injuries and responsibility for the shot remain unclear.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Nasir Best, was taken to hospital and later declared dead. No Secret Service personnel were injured.

U.S. President Donald Trump thanked law enforcement and Secret Service officers in a social media post and described the attacker as having a violent background and a possible fixation on the White House.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the northwestern boundary of the White House. Trump was inside the building at the time.

Authorities said the case adds to recent security-related incidents near high-profile federal locations, including two similar shootings in the past month.

Court records show Best had previously been detained for entering restricted White House areas and had a court-issued order barring him from the vicinity.

He had also been known to Secret Service personnel for prior attempts to access secured zones.

The shooting briefly triggered a White House lockdown and caused alarm among journalists on the North Lawn, who were quickly moved to secure areas as gunfire was heard nearby.
