Elephants are considered to be the magnificent gentle giants who have played a vital role in protecting our ecosystems

On World Elephant Day, let us known about the elephant reserves of Northeast India-

1. Kameng Elephant Reserve A thriving habitat of the gentle giant, this 1894 sq. km. forest is located in the districts of West Kameng and East Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh

2. South Arunachal Elephant Reserve This beautiful habitat of elephants with an area of 1957 sq. km. is located in Arunachal Pradesh

3. Sonitpur Elephant Reserve Situated in Sonitpur district of Assam, this elephant reserve has a total area of 1420 sq. km.

4. Dihing Patkai Elephant Reserve A part of the Dehing Patkai National Park, this 937 sq. km. elephant reserve is spread across Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam

5. Kaziranga- Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve This 3270 sq. km. elephant reserve of Assam is spread across Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts

6. Dhansiri-Lungding Elephant Reserve This 2740 sq. km. elephant reserve of Assam is spread across Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and North Cachar Hills

7. Chirang-Ripu Elephant Reserve Located across Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri districts of Assam, this elephant reserve has a total area of 2600 sq. km.

8. Garo Hills Elephant Reserve This 3500 sq. km. elephant reserve of Meghalaya is spread across  East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills

9. Intanki Elephant Reserve A part of the Intanki National Park, this 202 sq. km. forest was declared as an elephant reserve in 2005

10. Singphan Elephant Reserve This 23.57 sq. km. elephant reserve  is located in the Mon district of Nagaland and became the 30th elephant reserve in 2018
