The day of April 21 is marked as Sati Sadhani Divas every year in Assam in honour of Sati Sadhani who was a queen of the Chutia dynasty

The rulers of the Chutia dynasty ruled over Sadiya, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and even extended their powers up to Arunachal Pradesh

Sati Sadhani is the last queen of the Chutia kingdom which came into prominence during the 14th century

Born in Sadiya to King Dharmadhwajpal or Dhirnarayan, Sati Sadhani is known for her bravery , intelligence and courage even though her life has been full of adversities

When she reached the age of 19 years, her father organized a swayamvar ceremony for her to choose a husband from a group of suitors and promised to wed her to anyone who could shoot a running squirrel with an arrow

Sati Sadhani was finally married to a cowherd named Nitai as he was the only one who could complete the task successfully

After Dhirnarayan retired to the hills, Nitai or as renamed Nitipal could not run the kingdom effectively due to his lack of knowledge and he even expelled the experienced ministers of the kingdom and placed his childhood friends in various charges of governance

The tumultuous situation of the Chutia kingdom made Sati Sadhani take over the throne but unfortunately the Ahom invaded it by sensing the perfect opportunity of internal disharmony

The king and queen fled to the hills but the latter assembled a group of soldiers including females to attack the Ahom kingdom

Sati Sadhani who fought bravely till the defeat of the Chutias decided to end her life than face dishonor by jumping from the top of Chandragiri hills when she was asked to marry the Ahom governor Sadiyakhowa Gohain

Besides a state government holiday on April 21, an award - Sati Sadhani award- has been named after her was  by the Sutiya Jati Unnayan Parishad

Meanwhile, the Assam Government has also recently named a university in Golaghat in honour of the brave queen who is an epitome of women empowerment and a pride of Assam
