Karwa Chauth is an elaborate fasting ritual done by Hindu married women devotionally for the long life of their husbands

To break your Karwa Chauth fast the right way, follow these steps as suggested by Ayurveda expert Dr. Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya-

1. Have just a sip of plain water from your spouse’s hand and then add 1 tsp of Rock Salt in your water (to balance the electrolyte) and sip on it slowly. Make sure to not drink more than 1 glass of water at a time

2. Begin your meal with something sweet (eg, rock sugar, soaked dates, Jaggery, lauki/moong dal halwa, kaju katli, coconut ladoo, etc) rather than sour/salty or deep fried food that can irritate your gut. Eating sweet in the beginning makes you feel fuller as sweet foods are grounding in nature and helps you avoid over-eating (which can make you bloated and heavy).

3. After having a sweet of your choice, have something that’s sour in taste followed by salty, spicy and bitter or astringent in the end

4. Best foods to include in your Karwa Chauth thali are Rice, Dal (moong/madoor dal), vegetable curry (of your choice) along with millet/wheat Roti

5. Make sure everything you eat is well-cooked (do not eat raw/salad as it’ll be difficult for your gut to digest after resting/fasting for approx 24 hours).

6. Avoid curd in your meal as ayurveda suggests avoiding curd at night due to its slimy/sticky, hot and heavy to digest nature. If you’ve planned to eat curd, have buttermilk instead. Its easier to digest than curd

7.  Rather than having milk with your meal, having a glass of milk at bedtime is appropriate (as mixing milk with meals is a viruddha ahara)
