Monkey pox is a rare infection, typically caught from infected wild animals in parts of Africa.

Dozens of suspected or confirmed cases of monkeypox have been detected in North America and Europe since early May.

It is a relative of smallpox, causing a rash that often begins on the face.

Many of the reported cases "are occurring within sexual networks".

There's currently no specific treatment for the disease.

To stay safe from the disease, avoid contact with animals that could harbor the virus.

Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that have been in contact with a sick animal.

Isolate infected patients from others who could be at risk for infection.

Practice good hand hygiene after contact with infected animals or humans.

Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.
