Avinash Sable created history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in steeplechase in Commonwealth Games

By winning a silver medal in men’s 3000 metre steeplechase, Sable added another feather to his long list of historic achievements

Another remarkable feature of his historic achievement is that he became the first non-Kenyan to win a CWG medal in the sport since 1994

Born on September 13, 1994 in Maharashtra’s Mandwa village, Sable led a simple lifestyle

With no transport facility available in his village in childhood, Sable used to walk or run a distance of 6 km from home to school and vice versa

After passing Class 12, Sable joined the Indian Army and was first posted in Siachen Glacier which is the highest battleground in the world

He started his journey as a steeplechase player after his talent was recognized by his coach Amrish Kumar when serving at the Army

Sable broke a 37-year-old national record in steeplechase in 2018

He became the first Indian to qualify for Olympics in steeplechase in 2021

With so many records, Sable is already a steeplechase star who has a great potential to make the sport a popular one in India
